Appleby Agricultural Society has recommend that all horse owners follow the guidelines offered by the British Equestrian Federation on equine flu vaccination, but believe it is the horse owners choice to vaccinate their horse. Appleby Agricultural Society have never asked for horses to be vaccinated against flu in previous years. Appleby Agricultural Society have decided not to change this policy and have left individual owners to decide if they wish for their horse to be vaccinated.
Although influenza is endemic in many countries and circulates continuously in the equine population, explosive outbreaks occur at intervals of several years when the immunity of the equine population wanes, and sufficient antigenic drift in the virus has occurred, allowing the virus to evade vaccinal immunity. Hence why your vaccinated horse may also be able to shed the virus.
